Minor leaguers stand out in early games
April 14,  2003

Luis Terrero
Luis Terrero

The most impressive player we've seen this spring is Tucson Sidewinders' centerfielder Luis Terrero. The Diamondbacks farmhand is a legitimate five-tool player. If he can just stay healthy, the native of the Dominican Republic should be ready to move into the Arizona starting lineup in a year or so.

In a recent game against Edmonton, Terrero drove in the tying run on a triple to the right center gap, then reached base on a bunt to set up the winning run in the 10th inning ....

It was truly inspirational to see San Diego Padre southpaw Rob Ramsay back on the mound in a recent extended spring training game against the Giants. Ramsay had brain surgery to remove a tumor just over a year ago, and it was uncertain whether the 29-year-old pitcher would ever take the mound again. He is wearing a helmet, à la John Olerud, on the field to protect his head. Ramsay looked good in Saturday's two-inning stint at the Giants' Scottsdale training complex ....

One of the most exciting players we've seen in a long while is San Francisco minor leaguer Freddie Lewis. The young centerfielder, in his second professional season, brings blazing speed and a quick bat to the field. He is currently rehabilitating an injury with the Giants' extended spring training squad ...

Carlos Marmol
Carlos Marmol

The Chicago Cubs have been successful in converting position players to the mound in recent years. The latest member of their organization to make the switch to the hill is third-year pro Carlos Marmol. After two seasons as a catcher and outfielder with the rookie level Cubs, Marmol is now pitching for the extended spring training team.

The 20-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic is already throwing in the mid-90s, and is reported to have a wicked slider. The effervescent Marmol pitches with a fluid, natural-looking delivery ...

A visitor from the major league squad is livening up the Cubs' extended spring training camp, with closer Antonio Alfonseca working out in Mesa, Arizona while recovering from a hamstring injury. The hulking Alfonseca has died his hair a brilliant blond color.
