More observations from the

Steve Shirley |
Former Tulane
infielder Steve Shirley signed with the San Diego Padres
after playing last season with Edinburg of the independent
Central League. The 23-year-old third baseman is already
showing that he might be a good one that slipped through the cracks.
In a recent extended spring training game against the Cubs,
Shirley smacked a long homerun and a double in back to back at
bats ...
Not normally known
for his homerun prowess, Tucson Sidewinders' second baseman
Matt Kata put on quite a power display in this afternoon's game
against the visiting Tacoma Rainiers. The Arizona farmhand
pounded a long homerun to the top of the grassy slope in left
field at Tucson Electric Park, then hit an equally long foul
ball in his next at bat. It was the switch hitter's first
homerun of the season after he missed much of the early part of
the season recovering from an injury. Kata is batting .378 in
his first 37 at bats ...

Chris Snelling |
Sidewinder teammate
Chad Tracy also swung the bat well in the same game,
hitting a long homerun into the right field corner to go with a
triple and single. Watch for an upcoming interview with Tracy
...
Seattle outfield
prospect Chris Snelling, whose first taste of major league
life ended prematurely last season when the native Australian tore the
ACL in his knee, is playing for the Mariners' extended spring
training squad in preparation for returning to regular action. The
left-handed hitter is pounding the ball, but still looks tentative
on the base paths ....

Bobby Brownlie in his final
extended spring training game
|
Major league veteran
Charles Nagy is pitching for the Padres' extended spring
team, looking to get back to the big leagues to extend his 12-year
career. He looked sharp in his two innings of work last Saturday
against the Cubs. Also appearing in the same game was former
Kansas City closer candidate Shawn Sonnier, who last
pitched at the AAA level in 2001 before being traded to the Cubs
and suffering a shoulder injury that put the big Louisiana
right-hander on the shelf for all of last year ...
Chicago Cubs' 2002
first rounder Bobby Brownlie pitched his final extended
spring training game against the Giants last week, giving up one
run in four innings of work. The right-hander from Rutgers has
since joined High Class A Daytona, and pitched well in both of his
outings for the Florida State League club.
