Matt Bush, SS - San Diego – Few draftees in baseball history have
launched their careers in as rocky a fashion as Bush, who got
into trouble with the law just after signing his Padres
contract. After the obligatory time on the sidelines to teach
the 18-year-old native San Diegan a lesson, Bush started playing
for the Padres Arizona League team just over a week ago. He's a
flashy defender with a cocky attitude on the field. He's batting
.233/.368/.367 after his first eight games.

-
Philip Humber, P - New
York Mets - Not signed
-
Jeff Niemann, P - Tampa
Bay - Not signed
-
Mark Rogers, P - Milwaukee
- This high school product from the wilds of Maine has adjusted
nicely to pro ball on the far side of the country, having fanned
15 of the first 39 Arizona League batters he's faced in nine
innings.
-
Jeremy Sowers, P -
Cleveland - Not signed
-
Homer Bailey,
P - Cincinnati
- Signed, but has not yet played
-
Wade Townsend, P -
Baltimore - Not signed
-
Chris Nelson, SS -
Colorado - The Georgia high school product debuted with Casper of
the Pioneer League. He's hitting .288/.383/.308 after 13 games,
mostly as a designated hitter. His strikeout totals are rather
high (19 in 52 ABs)but not uncommon for young hitters
-
Thomas Diamond,
P -
Texas - The right-hander from the University of New Orleans has
already earned his first promotion after posting a 2.35 ERA and
a fine 26/5 K/BB rate in 15.1 IPs at short season Spokane. He
pitched five innings yesterday in his first Midwest League
start, giving up two runs on three hits and one walk.
-
Neil Walker, C -
Pittsburgh -
Walker signed with his hometown team immediately after the draft,
thus he's already played 29 games with the Buccos Gulf Coast
rookie league team. The switch-hitting catcher is batting
.264/.308./406 with 10 extra base hits in 106 ABs.
-
Jered Weaver,
P - Anaheim -

-
Bill Bray,
P - Montreal -
Signed, but has not yet played
-
Billy Butler,
3B - Kansas City -
The right-handed hitting Jacksonville, Florida high school product
is arguably the most impressive hitter to emerge from this
year's first round. Instead of starting Butler in the rookie
level Arizona League, the Royals assigned him to their new
Pioneer League affiliate in Idaho Falls. Butler has raked the
short season league pitchers to the tune of .369/.489/.511, with
10 doubles, two triples and two homeruns in 141 ABs. He's drawn
35 walks while striking out 34 times, showing impressive plate
discipline but with a few holes in his swing. Butler is most
definitely a prospect to watch closely.
-
Stephen Drew,
SS - Arizona -

-
David Purcey,
P - Toronto -

-
Scott Elbert, P - Los

rate in 24 IPs.
-
Josh Fields,

The White Sox jumped the Oklahoma State alumni right into the High
A Carolina League. The right-handed hitter hasn't been
overmatched, batting .254/.318/.406 with four HRs in 138 ABs.
Fields is already considered to be one of the White Sox top
prospects, and should be on the fast track to Chicago.
-
Chris Lambert,
P - St. Louis -
The Boston College right-hander has thrown three times for Peoria
of the Midwest League, and has yet to give up a run in nine IPs.
-
Trevor Plouffe,
SS - Minnesota -
The California high schooler began his pro career in the rookie
level Appalachian League. He's hitting .270/.333/.402 in 122 ABs.
-
Greg Golson,
OF - Philadelphia -
The right-handed hitting speedster is batting .277/.321/.356 in
the Gulf Coast League with eight SBs in 25 games. Golson's 27/3
K/BB rate shows that there are plenty of lessons to be learned.
-
Glen Perkins,
P - Minnesota -
It looks like the Twinkies may have struck pay dirt in drafting
local college product Perkins. The southpaw has already pitched
at two levels (Rookie and Low A), posting 2.25 and 1.86 ERAs,
respectively. Perkins has a combined 31/8 K/BB rate in 21.2 IPs.
-
Philip Hughes,
P - New York Yankees -
The California right-hander has made one appearance in the Gulf
Coast League, pitching two scoreless innings.
-
Landon Powell, C -
Oakland -
Powell's circuitous route to professional baseball landed him with
the organization that will most appreciate his "moneyball-type"
talents. After his first nine games with short season Vancouver,
Powell is hitting .152/.282/.394, which means he's drawing lots
of walks and hitting a couple of long bombs.
-
Kyle Waldrop,
P - Minnesota -
The Tennessee high school right-hander is off to a strong start,
posting a 1.45 ERA and 25/4 K/BB rate in 31 IPs in the Gulf
Coast League.
-
Richie Robnett,
OF - Oakland -
The Fresno State outfielder is off to a hot start for short season
Vancouver, batting .371/.450/.486 in nine games.
-
Taylor Tanskerley,
P - Florida -
The Alabama southpaw was outstanding in last night's pro debut,
hurling three perfect innings for short season Jamestown. He
fanned five batters in front of the home crowd.
-
Blake DeWitt,
SS - Los Angeles -
DeWitt signed early and has already played 36 Pioneer League
games. The Dodgers shifted him to third base, where he's made 13
errors. He's batting .275/.343/.497 with eight HRs in 153 ABs.
-
Matt Campbell,
P - Kansas City -
The South Carolina left-hander has appeared in three games for
advanced rookie league Idaho Falls. Command has been an issue
for Campbell, as he's walked nine batters in 9.2 IPs.
-
Eric Hurley, P - Texas -
Like their other first round selection (Diamond), the Rangers
have already promoted Hurley. After posting a 2.35 ERA in 15.1
Arizona League innings, the Florida right-hander moved to short
season Spokane, where he's made one four-inning appearance.
